A Family Story Written Into the Land
SkyScape began as a simple vision: to share the beauty, silence, and vastness of Omahau Hill Station with travellers from around the world.
What started as a humble dream has become one of New Zealand’s most unique luxury retreats, where land, sky, and thoughtful architecture come together to create something deeply grounding and unforgettable.
When Bevan and Bridget Newlands travelled the world, they found themselves drawn to accommodation that felt personal and connected, places built with heart, shaped by nature, and connected to the land and the people who lived there. They loved experiences where you could step outside, breathe crisp air, and look up into an endless sky.
When they eventually returned to the family farm in the Mackenzie Basin to raise their two sons, the idea for SkyScape began to take root. One evening, lying under a makeshift clear panel to watch the stars, they wondered:
What if we could share this feeling with others?
It began humbly with a hole in the ground with a sheet of plastic stretched above it, simply so they could watch the night sky. But as all good ideas do, it grew. It became a sketch, then a small structure, and eventually evolved into the luxury eco-destination SkyScape guests experience today.
The first SkyBed opened in 2017, followed by the second and third in 2020. Since then, guests from all over the world have come to experience what Bevan and Bridget always knew: that this land is magical. That here, in the quiet of the Mackenzie Basin, you can feel both grounded and uplifted at once.
From proposals to anniversaries, stargazing escapes to South Island road trips, SkyScape has become a place where memories take root.
Our Vision
SkyScape was created to be more than a place to stay.
It is a place to reconnect with nature, with each other, and with yourself.
A place to feel the land beneath you and the universe above you.
A place built for slow living, stargazing, celebration, reflection, and wonder.
We invite you to experience the Mackenzie Region the way we do with open skies, open spaces, and an open heart.
Begin your SkyScape journey, check availability and plan your stay.
Meet the Newlands Family
SkyScape is owned and operated by the Newlands family, Bridget and Bevan, along with their two boys.
Bevan brings engineering expertise and the craftsmanship behind each structure.
Bridget brings warmth, problem-solving, and the guest experience that makes SkyScape feel like home.
The boys bring joy, energy, and a connection to the future of the station.
Together, they welcome guests not just to a destination, but to their family’s land and legacy.
Built By Hand, Inspired By Nature
Each SkyBed is an off-grid, eco-conscious structure created using local materials and passive design principles. They are crafted to sit lightly on the land while keeping guests warm, comfortable, and deeply connected to their surroundings.
Key features include:
Stonework collected from nearby paddocks
Solar-powered energy systems
Double glazing & thermal mass for natural climate control
Radiators for warmth during high-country winters
Automated vents and thermostatically controlled windows for summer cooling
Earthen roofs planted with native grasses to blend with the hillside
SkyScape isn’t just accommodation; it’s architecture designed to honour place, environment, and longevity.
A Station With History
Omahau Hill Station spans 6,000 acres of spectacular high-country terrain. For decades this farming family has cared for this land, managing merino sheep and beef cattle while allowing 60 acres to regenerate into natural habitat.
This unique combination of working farm and revived wilderness gives SkyScape its special character, expansive, peaceful, untouched, and alive.
SkyScape is a luxury, off-grid accommodation in Twizel, New Zealand, offering private glass roof cabins for stargazing in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
