SkyScape is conveniently situated in the stunning MacKenzie Country, which is host to a number of activities for you to enjoy. On this page you will find suggestions to local activities to assist you when planning your stay with us. We recommend you book activities well in advance during the summer months, as things can book out quickly. Activities can be arranged for you during your stay at SkyScape.
Mt Cook Village and National Park
Full of spectacular scenery, numerous walks and hikes, Mt Cook Village situated in Mount Cook National Park is a 55 minute drive from SkyScape. Mt Cook Village offers numerous activities including, boating on the glacier lakes and horse treks. Mt Cook is the perfect day trip while enjoying a two night stay at SkyScape.
Alps to Ocean Cycleway
The Alps to Ocean is a 300km cycleway that runs from Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak, to Oamaru by the coast passing through some of New Zealand’s most spectacular scenery on the way. The Cycleway passes 500m from the SkyScape office and we offer a free shuttle service from our office to SkyScape.
SkyScape has a helipad on the property making SkyScape the ideal place from which to enjoy a scenic helicopter flight around Aoraki/Mt Cook (New Zealand’s highest mountain at 3,724m) and the Tasman Glacier, New Zealand’s longest glacier at 29km in length.
SkyScape provides the perfect location to explore the many walks in the spectacular Mackenzie Country. Omahau Hill Station has Flanagan’s Pass Trail running through the farm. From Skyscape, you can join onto this trail and explore the back basin of the farm on foot.
International Dark Sky Reserve
SkyScape is situated in the world renowned Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the best places in the world to see the night sky. The Dark Sky Project in Tekapo, is a 45 minute drive away and offer some incredible night time tours. Other options include Tekapo Springs and the Planetarium at The Hermitage.
Tekapo is a 50 minute drive from SkyScape. Tekapo offers various activities and sites for you to explore, including Tekapo Springs, The Church of the Good Shepherd and Earth and Sky.
One Ring Tours, Twizel
This company is based in Twizel and has a number of different tour options if you want to relive the magic of the Lord of the Rings movies. Omahau Hill Station features in the Lord of the Ring Trilogy. The largest scene in The Return Of The King, The Battle Of Pelennor Fields filmed was filmed on the neighbouring Ben Ohau Station and many of the scenes feature the hill that SkyScape is built on.
There are a number of fixed wing flights available in the area from the Pukaki Airport, Mount Cook Airport or Lake Tekapo.
